I did it. Jumped on the sunburst bandwagon. I couldn't resist! I think this super-sized version of the DIY sunburst is exactly what my newly painted dining room wall needed.
I followed Janell's tutorial but switched up a few things. Instead of using regular sticks, I used bamboo sticks (a bundle from Michael's was only $4 with a coupon). FYI, the mirror is a Target clearance special ($9.99).
I spray painted the sticks a metallic silver color, instead of a flat white.
And as you can see, I just about doubled the size of the sticks as compared to Janell's mirror- I knew I wanted the sunburst mirror to go in the dining room and, therefore, it had a lot of space to fill. So, I decided: go big or go home! I know that I need more art on the walls to help balance out the dramatic mirror (and I need to change out that light fixture! I'm working on it!), but I think this is a good start.
I know it's not perfect, but neither were the shape of the bamboo sticks that make up the mirror. Each stick sort of bends in its own direction, so it was a chore to get them to lay in a semi-straight pattern.
(For example, see the little gap on the top of the mirror? Both sticks are rolled out in opposite directions, leaving a little space. Awww, it's sort of like a kid with no front teeth, isn't it?! See, now you love my not-so-perfect mirror too!)
I kind of love the fact that it's not perfect- it gives the mirror lots of dimension and personality :)

Sidenote: thoughts on the seat cushions I'm testing out?
They look good up close, but I'm not sure about whether or not they flow with the room overall.
Michelle this is great! You are so creative. I love how the mirror pops off the wall color (:
ReplyDeleteIt looks so good! I think it is SO funny that we both just finished DIY sunburst mirrors!
ReplyDeleteI your wall color, absolutely love it! Also, I think the seat cushions are perfect!
Thats it, I am adding you to by sidebar. I don't want to miss out on anything!
That is so great! And I LOVE the color of your dining room. I may have saved a picture as inspiration for the day I buy a house.
ReplyDeleteLove it! It looks perfect on the dark blue wall.
ReplyDeleteI also really like the cushions. I think they're the perfect pop of color.
x
Wow, yours is fabulous, thanks for the shout out! You make me want to do the project all over again and vary the branch length as you did...amazing! Janell
ReplyDeleteI just SA-WOON for your blog, love!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm dying for this mirror. My sister made one as well, and she changes it up with spray paint whenever she gets bored! Love it!!!
Honestly, every day I read my blog roll and am so amazed by the fantastic sunburst mirrors I see--and this is no exception! I adore the added texture that the bamboo lends (and I didn't notice that unruly mind-of-their own at all!) It looks amazing, especially against your lovely new navy walls.
ReplyDeleteAnd sidenote: I love the cushions. Perfect contrast, perfect unexpected pop of fun, and a perfect way to incorporate mutli-colored accessories. Looks so amazing!
The mirror is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing, Michelle! It is just perfect! I love the seat cushions -- I bought either the same or very similar fabric last weekend in the form of napkins from World Market. It looks looking fabulous! And I love your jars for the centerpiece!
ReplyDeleteI love your version of the sunburst mirror, probably better than one you would pay a lot for. The imperfection makes it so interesting. Love the fabric on the chair cushions as well. The play perfectly off your wall color!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! I love how big it is...definitely makes it pop!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is cool! Makes me want to make my own immideatly!!!
ReplyDeleteI saw Danielle's yesterday...Love them both!! I like the seat cushions. It's funny, as soon as I saw the picture of the chairs I thought "Michelle got new cushions, those are great!"
ReplyDeleteI love it Michelle! The wall color, the mirror, and the seat cushions.

I. Love. This. [!!!!!] :)
ReplyDeletethis looks great. Looove that navy color!
ReplyDeleteGreat job--it looks amazing! Also thumbs up on the wall color and the seat cushions!
ReplyDeleteIt looks pretty perfect to me, I don't know what you're talking about! It really pops against that dramatic blue wall.
ReplyDeletethat looks amazing!!! i really need to make one of these- i have just the spot!
ReplyDeleteI adore your mirror - love the scale you chose, the texture of the sticks, and the uneven spacing simply makes it look more designer-y in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I must be the sole voice of dissent on the chair cushions. Your walls and mirror are dramatic and 'after dark', whereas the cushions say more 'breakfast room' to me.
the mirror looks great! especially on your pretty newly painted wall! :)

Love that you jumped on the bandwagon!! I was thinking about it too but didn't know if we were over the sunburst mirrors or not - and now that I've seen yours, clearly I'm not over them! :) Fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteAH-MAZ-ING!!!! LOVe the extra big size!! I need to make one of these stat...but where to put it?!?! I'd love one in my dining room over the piano, but i have two round mirrors in there already...might be a little vain to have a mirror on every wall?!?!
ReplyDeleteThat looks awesome, Michelle! I love how big you did it! I also love those navy walls, the mirror looks perfect!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great against your wall color! Love it!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I've been meaning to tackle this project myself, but kind of forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me!! Yours looks amazing, so I'm excited to try too:)
ReplyDeleteWOW! Thats an amazing piece!
ReplyDeleteSpeechless...it looks amazing! Way to go lady!
ReplyDeleteOh my word it looks incredible!! You did an amazing job and should be so proud. I love how it looks on the newly painted walls. And the cushions are adorable! I kind of like them together with the dark walls :) xo

What a great DIY job! silver looks great with your new wall colour. Samantha
ReplyDeleteThat is just gorgeous!!! It looks great in your dining room!! And I just love the chairs, too. :)
ReplyDeleteUm, I love it. I can't believe you made it. Looks fab on those moody walls.
ReplyDeleteLove the mirror - it looks great and I haven't read all the posts on the chairs, I wanted to post before seeing everyone else's response.... honest opinion, with the white chairs they feel really beachy - I don't know why, but that is what I thought when I saw them... the navy and sunburts feels very modern sleek and the chair cushions feel french country - I think they are pretty, just not what I expect in that room
ReplyDeleteThe sunburst looks great! I am in love with these, but don't want to spend a ton of money on one. Now I might just have to make my own!
ReplyDelete& I really do like the cushion seats in general, but I just don't know if they flow with the rest of the room. But it's your house :)
Um WOW!!! I LOVE! Those set cushions are fab!
ReplyDeleteLuvs!
I heart this mirror big time! I think I'm going to have to make one myself. Once again, there you go inspiring me with new ideas for my house! :)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I LOVE your mirror! I've been wanting one like that for-ever. Yours turned out even better than ones I've seen in the stores. Well done!

Where have I been. Mirror is stunning. Such a great impact {one of my all time fav quotes around here is go big or go home!} Room is really coming together. I like the fun color in the cushions. Keeps the eye moving. super cute
ReplyDeleteI love it!!! And I love the beadboard around the dining room. It all looks fabulous. =]
ReplyDeletehello! just found you via cottage and vine and i think a have a blog crush! you and your blog are AHdorable! I'll be back often!

Great job!
How did I miss this?? This is just fantastic! I want to come and steal it, in fact! ha! I love the pattern on the chair cushions, but I'm not too big on the shape. Maybe it's the tufts? Not sure. I do love the fabric though. If you could find a table runner or maybe even some how fold those cushions in half and sew to make small bolsters for the chairs.. haha, I don't know if that would even be possible. I do REALLY like that print though.. where did you get them? Oh, and the dresser was an old one that we painted and changed the hardware.
ReplyDeleteHi - saw you on Shabby Nest, and came over to take a peek at the mirror. I LOVE IT! So cute!
ReplyDeleteVisiting from Tatertots & Jello. LOVE the mirror! Great job!
ReplyDeletethis mirror is gorgeous, great job
ReplyDeleteI love the toothy grin!! It's perfect with that big size and I like how it pops against the dark walls and wainscot. The seat cushions are also awesome! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful sunburst mirror!
ReplyDeleteThat is my favorite sunburst mirror I have seen so far! I have bookmarked it for me to try to do! Gorgeous color on your walls too!

Hey Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI just saw your sunburst link right next to mine on D.D.
They look nealy identical. Crazy.
Great job!
I think it looks great! Love it! I can't see any imperfections at all! ;)
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! We are decorating our master and I just decided I wanted a star-burst mirror for above our bed! I can't wait to make my own.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!
This is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThat is fantastic!! I love it and love your wall color. Would love for you to join my party which runs on Wednesdays with the link up Tuesday night.
ReplyDeletewell now that is just too PURTTTYY! very very cool!
ReplyDeleteTana
Quite nice. I am making a yellow one for my daughter's room - kind of like a burst of sun in her room. I like your idea of go big or go home. I agree totally.
ReplyDeletelooks awesome! loving the dimension and the difference in the spokes!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks perfectly imperfect. You really did a great job. I just may have to try one myself... Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteFab! I was considering a navy for my living room but decided it was too dark for the space. I adore how yours turned out, though!
ReplyDeleteHoly moly, girl! love it! I'm not sure what I'm loving the most- the mirror, the navy walls, the chair cushions. Just love!!
ReplyDeleteI recently started looking at blogs again (and starting to add some new posts to mine!) and am so glad I stumbled on yours! Definitely adding you to my list! Great job!
Found you on a blog hop-what an amazing mirror you created -inspiring! Claire
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing in your room! Seems easy enough too that maybe I should give it a try :)
ReplyDeleteP.s. I think the cushions look great!
this makes the room.
ReplyDeletelove how you varied the length...
Absolutley love it!! I put this on my Facebook page!
ReplyDeleteI love the size. It looks absolutly perfect in the dining room.
ReplyDeleteI love your wall color and the mirror. I don't love the cushions for this room. They remind me of country and this room is definitely not country. You need something more chic to go with that beautiful wall color.
ReplyDeleteI like how you varied the lengths - love the mirror!!!
ReplyDeleteWay to go on that mirror! And, I ABSOLUTELY love those cushions and think they go perfectly!!
ReplyDeleteLove what you did with this mirror!! I need to get myself on the sunburst mirror bandwagon....I love them!!
ReplyDeleteThis goes so well in your beautifully painted dining room!
Thanks so much for linking this wonderful mirror to my party.
ReplyDeleteImpressive!! I'm your newest follower (On blog loving!!)
ReplyDeleteFound you via Decor Chick..love the dark color w/the fresh crisp white in the dining room..not a 100% sure about the seat cushions, though, is that okay to say, lol?
ReplyDeleteI whole heartedly agree with everyone on how fabulous this sunburst looks. In general I am a 'go big' person too when it comes to wall decor. Great job!
ReplyDeleteDi
Love it! This so does NOT look like something homemade! Thanks for linking up to "Amaze Me Monday" blog party. I will be featuring you this week.
ReplyDeleteI love the mirror Michelle! I love how it looks against your dark walls(which are beautiful btw). I just started reading The Hour I First Believed by Wally Lamb(per your suggestion). It's great so far! Thanks for suggesting it!
ReplyDeletethe mirror is fabulous, and i love the colors in the room. not crazy about the cushions--i think they get lost because the color is too similar to the floor. i would go probably go with something in the red to orange range, but chartreuse or lime could work, too.
ReplyDeleteI love the shape of this mirror. It gives much more character than just a circular sunburst design. Reminds me of a snowflake yet isn't Christmasy at all. Excellent job!
ReplyDelete82 comments?!?!? woot woot!
ReplyDeletequestion: is this DIY version pretty lightweight? I've decided I need one, but want to mount it (twss) on my big wall mirror in the entrance hall (layered mirrors, i love looking at me). I just picked up a $25 starburst at target. A) Can I make it cheaper, B) is the stick version lightweight?
mmmmkay, thanks
