I know I promised that 2013 was the year of big announcements... heyy, we're moving to a rental house! We're having a baby! We're moving to another rental house! We sold our house, kind of! We're having a baby boy! I quit my full-time job! Yeah, 2013 was chock full of announcements.
But, despite my promise, I've got an announcement for 2014 that will knock your socks off.
David and I learned last week that, contrary to our belief and the information provided to us over the past five months, our sweet baby number two is not, actually, a boy.
WE'RE HAVING A GIRL!
You heard me right. Baby #2 is a she!
So, here's the quick version. At about 13 weeks pregnant, I had my end-of-the-first-trimester ultrasound. My doctor's office, with the caveat that it was pretty early, said they were about 75% sure it was a boy. Fast forward two weeks, when David and I (with whom patience is not a virtue) got an elective ultrasound with an ultrasound technicians office and he declared that it was 100% a boy. He also called HDawg's gender, so we trusted him and his opinion. At 20 weeks, I had another ultrasound with my doctor's office. Apparently my little bean had legs crossed and pulled back, so there was no gender confirmation done that day. But we showed the technician the 15 week photos and she, like us, was pretty sure at what we were looking at and said, for sure that's a boy!
Now, here we are, 13 weeks later. My doctor wanted to check my fluid levels (sorry, TMI) and ordered an ultrasound for me last Thursday. David and I waltz into the ultrasound room, excited to see our little man. I laid down, the technician squirted the gel all over my stomach, pulled up the image on the television screen and said, "Your baby girl looks perfectly healthy!"
Jigga what?
Baby girl?
David awkward laughed and said, "Ha! You mean our baby boy?"
"Oh no," the technician says, "this is 100% a girl."
Crickets.
Several days and one more third-party ultrasound technician opinion later (who, for the record, unanimously agreed that we are 100% having a little girl), the shock remains. Our second child, whom we've already named with a boy name, bought boy clothes for and made a boy nursery for is... a girl! That's some crazy news when you're only about five weeks from meeting her, right?!
Crazy, but unbelievably exciting. All along, David and I have felt so blessed with this second baby and we are over the moon excited about the fact that she's a little girl. Seriously, what incredible news! We were so excited to have another little boy, but the news that we're having a little girl is just amazing. It's like this little creature we had no clue existed in the world has been with us the whole time. Rocking some ruffles and a big ol' hair bow, that's for sure ; )
For those of you who are wondering, apparently the original gender confirmations were made in error due to some hormone-surged swollen little girl parts. Again, TMI, but it can happen, apparently. So here we are! I'm 33 weeks pregnant and had HDawg at 38 weeks, meaning that we've got about five weeks to find this sweet little girl a name, some clothes and a nursery. But one thing is for certain- she's already got a huge spot in mine and David's hearts and in our little family of soon-to-be four.
So, while I promised no more big announcements in 2014... I'm pretty excited to break that promise and share this grand ol' news with y'all! Now, who wants to hep me paint the nursery pink?!
Ohmygoodness! I guess life is full of surprises :) Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteomg Michelle, I am dying laughing I was seriously convinced our baby was going to come out a boy. even when they told us it was a girl. I have heard about this happening to people wasn't sure it really did! Aren't you glad you found out now instead of on the delivery table!! You will love having one of each its so special!
ReplyDeleteThats amazing!!! Congratulations, enjoy the rest of the pregnancy and planning!!! Such a exciting time!
ReplyDeleteYAY!
ReplyDeleteOMG how exciting... and anxiety filled! So happy for you guys!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! We didn't find out what we were having and we always thought and were convinced it was a baby boy. To our surprise it was a girl and we couldn't believe it, it was so exciting and the happiest day of our lives! Yay for girls!
ReplyDeleteBlame it on the pregnancy hormones...but I actually treated up reading this. And um.....holy crap! Congratulations!!! That is so insanely crazy and exciting!
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow! What a shock!!! I continually tell Nate that we could get to the hospital and she could be a he. We've asked at every appointment and the keep saying "well, it doesn't tend to change!" LIARS :)
ReplyDeleteWe're due feb 17- sounds like we're on the same track!
Michelle, O.M.G.!!! Congrats on your little surprise! Being a girl-mom is so much fun - you are going to love it! And just imagine how precious HDawg will be taking care of his little "sister." Awww, too cute for words. :)
ReplyDeleteYep, sometimes when it's an early ultrasound little girl parts can be swollen & trick you into thinking it's boy parts :). I have a friend that found out around 12 weeks that it was 90% chance it was a boy...I'm waiting for confirmation😉
ReplyDeleteThat's wild! The good news is that little girls can totally rock blue - it's my favourite colour ;)
ReplyDeleteOOOOH YAY! boy and girl is the best! one of each and you get to see your son's super sweet side even more! of course there will be sibling bickering, but i am SOOOOOOO over the moon excited about this!
ReplyDeleteWOW! What a fun surprise! Hopefully you make quick changes to get everything ready for her!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I'm 41 weeks right now and only had 1 ultrasound back at 20 weeks. I cannot imagine what we'd do if we deliver a little girl instead of a boy. Talk about turning your world topsy-turvy! Never a dull moment with these kiddos, right?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I read another blog where a couple was expecting their second child and if I remember correctly they were told it was 100% a boy. Then she went into delivery and surprise it is a girl. Talk about a surprise!
ReplyDeleteWell that is a big surprise!!! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteOh wow!! :) Imagine if you didn't find out until you had her! HA! :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats, can't wait to see what you do with all the pink!
That's CRAZY!!! But so wonderful. You'll love having a sweet little girl! We have one of each and it's so fun!! Enjoy these next few weeks before she makes her grand appearance!! That's amazing news!!

Holy crap that is so exciting!!! We had a similar situation with Tagg. Weeks 14-26 he was a she :) In fact, Matthew wasn't even with me at the ultrasound that most definitely produced a doodle. I have to say having one of each is a bit less thrilling in the hand-me-down department but oh so freaking exciting in every other aspect. And a girl wearing blue and green and brown is a lot more doable than poor T in his pink jammies ;)
ReplyDeleteNo.flipping.waaaaaayyyy!!!! This is crazy!! I'm so excited for you guys but am totally freaking out about my "100% boy" verdict!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I have never known anyone who had that happen to them! Very exciting indeed - I can't wait to see how you redesign the nursery :) Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! This is exactly why I make the ultrasound tech check at every appt to make sure the baby is "still a girl!" I get pretty regular ultrasounds thankfully since I take medicine for my thyroid and will definitely be asking once again tomorrow at my next ultrasound (31 wks). I'm sure it's a hard shift for you mentally, but that's exciting that you'll have a boy and a girl!
ReplyDeleteOh Wow! What a fun surprise! :) I'm also 33 weeks with our second child (first is a girl) and we've been told #2 is 100% a boy but I'm going in for a ultrasound next week to check HIS growth and I keep wondering...what if he is actually a she?! Can't believe that happened to y'all! :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolultey LOVE this!! So so excited for you!! She is one blessed little lady already!! xoxoxox
ReplyDeleteSo crazy! And exciting! I've heard of people (but never personally known anyone) who were told they were having one gender, and then when the baby was born it ended up being the other. It's great that you at least get 5 weeks to plan!! :)
ReplyDeleteHoly moly! I've heard stories like this but never "knew" anyone that had this happen! You just be in total shock! So exciting though that you will have one of each now!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! This totally happened to me this pregnancy too except in reverse. We were told it was "definitely!" a girl only to find out that it is a boy! We've had two ultrasounds since then (for other reasons) and had both techs confirm that he is still a he - and one even showed us his boy bits in 3D/4D to ease my concern. Our reaction is similar to yours - we're over-the-moon thrilled either way and at least we have a funny story to tell him later :-)
ReplyDeleteAwesome news!!!!!! It would be equally exciting if it was the opposite way, but nonetheless - a baby girl!!!! I'm old (42) and can't tell you how many friends and family members had misdiagnosed baby genders, but you almost never hear of that anymore with today's technology! Too funny! So happy for you and your family, can't wait to see her beautiful little face!
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned, girls can rock blue and boy things with style and ease. And baby girls don't need flowers pasted to their heads (no matter how gender-strictly you dress a kid, someone ALWAYS says "oh what a cute little Other-Gender" right?! :)
ReplyDeleteIf you have a blue room already, how adorable would pops of red or magenta be to lessen the baby boy blue? No need to grab a can of pink paint at all!
That's crazy and so fun! In addition to the blood test we did early to determine gender, I'm sure the ultrasound techs at the office are sick of me asking a million times "are you sure she's a she?" during every ultrasound. Hooray for a little girl!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh! How exciting!! There have been so many boys in blog land lately, I'm excited to see what you do for little miss! :)
ReplyDeleteLike I said before……..only you and David! ;) SO excited for you. Love ya!! xo
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! This happened to my sister, except she didn't find out until she had my niece. This was only a few years ago. The dr wasn't ever able to 100% confirm it was a boy, but he was still pretty sure it as a boy. Not so much! At least you've got a few weeks to prepare!!
ReplyDeleteWow, what news! Super exciting!
ReplyDeleteThat's hilarious! I have carried all of my kids 'high and tight' and people emphatically declare us to be having a bog... 3 girls (and 1 boy) later and shows what they know! We've never had the docs tell us gender, but I can only imagine your surprise! :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! Talk about a surprise, but what a good one! So exciting you will have one of each!
ReplyDeleteWTH??!!! That is hilarious and thrilling! How fun to have a boy aND a girl! Now, get busy, mama!
ReplyDeletexo Heidi
Oh my gosh that's crazy! Didn't even know stuff like that could happen anymore! Yay for ruffles and pink!
ReplyDeleteWonderful news! Congratulations!!
ReplyDeleteI think it's about the most fun surprise you could get!!! I'm so excited for HDawg to be protective big bro over his sissy!!! xoxox
ReplyDeleteWow--you don't hear this happening a lot. Although, didn't you have a blood test early on--the fairly new test that tells you if it's a boy or girl? My best friend just had the blood test done that tells you for sure.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting!! HDawg is going to be a great big brother to his little sister!!! My former SIL's sister (did ya follow that) was expecting #3, they swore it was a girl right up until delivery...room painted, pretty clothes bought (the first two were boys)...surprise arrived in the delivery room!!! My sil and her mom had to scramble to paint the room before baby came home to make her feel better. So, at least you have a little time. I am all about girls, so let me know when you want to shop!! LOL
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! What a roller coaster! Congratulations!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi this is Painter Nepal. Congratulations!!! :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow that is crazy! I hope you bought some gender neatral colurs that little miss can get some wear out of still :)
ReplyDeleteSo crazy! But I'm sure it was an added fun surprise! Congrats again and now you get to decorate a third nursery ;)
ReplyDeleteWHAT?!! That's so awesome! Better to find out now than in the delivery room, I guess! What a fun surprise! Bring on the decorating!
ReplyDeleteMichelle--this is hilarious and wonderful :) Better you know now than at delivery. I loved this post!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a whirlwind! My friends and family think im crazy, but this is why we never wanted to find out with any of our kids. We waited til delivery day to be surprised. Our next baby will be the same day. We just don't wanna know:) Congrats on your new baby GIRL:)
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! Congratulations to you! XOXO
ReplyDeleteGIRL, I had no idea, just seeing this!! Ack, that is crazy news my friend, congrats!
ReplyDeleteWow! What an amazing story! So fun to have one of each, enjoy the final weeks of pregnancy! <3
